[2009 - This is pretty much old news, a website by accretion written ages ago, when I knew little about web design, with occasional new pages stuck on like shoddy additions nailed onto an old house. If you got here, I probably gave you the link in the first place, and you know it's not meant to represent who I am today. I may update it in the future. This page is mostly an old arts bio mostly written for the ODC web site a decade ago. All the "fun stuff" is in my side pages, linked at the bottom. Animated pic to left is composed of webcam shots from Oct 2003. The other photo is from December 2008.]

I am a lifelong musician with a strong connection to dance, and a passion for polyrhythms and counter-melodies. I've composed and performed as a guitarist and bassist playing a diversity of Folk and Pop styles. At UC Santa Cruz, I studied and performed West Javanese Gamelan with Master Musician Undang Sumarna, learning both the traditional dance and the accompanying drumming style. I have played music for stage ("Hair," and a production of Elizabeth Swados' "Job"), and accompanied my own original masked theater piece, "Out of Ashes." For several years, I was dance accompanist at ODC Performance Gallery, playing for dance instructors including KT Nelson, Anne Bluthenthal, and Ellie Klopp. My last band, the World Beat Bastards, played a mongrel blend of infectious original dance music, with roots in funk and other grooves from around the world. Not sure what my next project is going to be, probably back to my rock/folk/pop roots..

At 23, I began the transition from improvisational musician to improvisational tap dancer, creating my own style, learning over the years from such masters as Foster Johnson, Louis DaPron, Jimmy Slyde, Henry Le Tang, Sam Weber, Danny Daniels, Dean Barlow, Gregory Hines, and Chuck Green. I am a respected teacher, performer, and writer about tap dancing. My articles on improvisation, designing a tap education, Paddle & Roll style, and other topics appear regularly in the International Tap Association Newsletter. My professional tap credits include dancing and dubbing taps for the movie "Tap," the James L. Brooks film "I'll Do Anything," and the Ren & Stimpy audio recording "YOU EEDIOT!"

My connection to modern dance began with dancing in an early version of Donald Byrd's "The Minstrel Show" at UC Santa Cruz, where I also composed a score for "Elegy of a Beast" by Martin Kravitz. I have continued my involvement with modern dance, including a two week residency with Urban Bush Women in 1992.

I hold a M.F.A.in Theater Directing from California Institute of the Arts and a B.A. in Theater Directing from UC Santa Cruz. I have served on the faculty of Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts 1988-89,East Bay Center for the Performing Arts 1993-97, and Cazadero Performing Arts Camp.
